For years I was a home decor trend follower. I jumped on the bandwagon and held on tight! I also bought everything in sight. First, it was warm colors like Tuscan-ish. I cringe thinking about all the dark red I used in our decor. I don’t like red, so I don’t know why I was using it. Then, slowly I went to farmhouse style-light, bright, white with random stuff you might find on a farm.

While there’s nothing wrong with decorating “on-trend” or buying new decor all the time, there are times when it can be frustrating or stressful to try to keep up. Trends can change so often. So, let me tell you a secret. You and your family are the only ones who live there. Decorate or don’t decorate according to your needs. If you still love the same paint color after ten years, keep it. It’s your home, and it should reflect your family.
“Be faithful to your own taste, because nothing you really like is ever out of style.”
Billy Baldwin
It has taken me a while, but I have realized what I like is not always on-trend, nor does it have to be. I’ve learned to be ok with that, and you should be too. If I come to visit, I want your house to help me learn more about you and your family. Toys on the floor tells me kids are there often. Family photos show the family you’ve been blessed with and so on.

I have begun to appreciate my style and understand that it doesn’t fit into one category. I like what I like.
So, what do I use in my decor?

I’m glad you asked. We’re filling it with new things, old things, found things, made things, and family things. Simply put, we’ve filled it with things we love.

My mom loaned me my great grandmother’s sideboard and China cabinet. It’s hard to put into words the feeling of owning something that has been in my family for what will be four generations, including my daughter. Priceless pieces like those two are so beautiful to me.

I am also slowly adding more color to my home and finding a balance of colors I enjoy. Paint can change a room in surprising ways. It’s an easy update you can do yourself. I painted our fireplace, and it completely transformed our living room.

I get requests for help with decorating and what to put where, and I always want you to use what you love in your home. I can give suggestions and ideas, which is so much fun, but if you want something, in particular, GO FOR IT! For instance, I used to have a multicolored cow hanging in my kitchen.
If you do need some help with a space in your home, I would love to help you find what you love for that space. Please email me with a photo at annakateturnerdiy@gmail.com. You spend so much time in your home it should be a sanctuary, and somewhere you enjoy, and sometimes the way something looks helps foster that environment.
So, if you come to my house, I could take you on a LONGGGGGG tour and explain each piece of furniture and decor. Where I got it, why I got it, and I usually remember how much it cost if I bought it — all of this to say that your style does not have to fit anyone else’s. Even the style of your home can be uniquely you.
