Dollar Tree is one of my favorite places to buy craft and DIY supplies. There are so many ways to transform inexpensive supplies into beautiful decor. I have had this project on my mind for a while, so I was excited when I finally got the opportunity to create these twin topiaries. In this post, I’ll be sharing how you can do it, too, with a full-length tutorial video and supply list. They turned out amazing! I hope you give this project a try.
Supply list:
- terra cotta pot
- moss ball (or any round shape like a plastic toy ball)
- stick from outside (or a dowel)
- loose moss
- dry floral foam
- black sand
- mod podge
- paintbrush
- white paint (or any color you want to use if you choose to paint)

Before starting my craft, I filled my pot with dry floral foam. The foam helps create a secure base to stick in the topiary. I used hot glue to fill in any holes left in the floral foam, so when I added my sand, it wouldn’t fall into the bottom of the pot.
First, decide on decorations for your pot. I wanted mine to look distressed, so I mixed my chalk paint with water and brushed it on lightly, leaving the top of the terra cotta plain. You could add color, patterns, and even stamp designs on your pot if you want a different look.
Once you finish the pot, add a thin layer of mod podge on top of the foam, then add some sand on top of the mod podge. In the video, I didn’t allow the first layer of sand to dry, but usually, I would let it dry before sealing the sand with another layer of mod podge.
While that is drying, let’s make your moss ball. The balls I bought from Dollar Tree were the perfect base, but they were too small in comparison to my pot, so I wanted to add the loose moss to make them bigger. I added one layer with hot glue around the ball and cupped it in my hand to help reshape it. Adding the extra layer of moss made them the perfect size for the pot.
You will have some leftover moss, and I have more moss projects to share like the props I made for a birthday party and this DIY spring wreath.
To finish your topiary, add the stick in the moss ball carefully, then stick it into the pot. Try to get things centered and straight because you don’t want to reposition once you pierce the floral foam. If you have loose strings of moss, you can cut those with some scissors.
Now it’s time to find a special place for your topiary. Here’s mine. This project doesn’t look like it came from the Dollar Tree at all.
